Q7.2 (iii):
Write structures of the compounds whose IUPAC names are as follows: 3,5-Dimethylhexane –1, 3, 5-triol
Solution :
Step 1: Identifying the Parent Alkane Chain
The IUPAC name 3,5-Dimethylhexane–1,3,5–triol indicates a parent alkane chain of 6 carbon atoms (hexane). [Per IUPAC nomenclature rules for naming polyhydric alcohols].
Step 2: Numbering the Carbon Chain and Identifying Substituents
Based on the suffix "-1,3,5-triol", hydroxyl ($-OH$) groups are positioned at carbon atoms $C_1$, $C_3$, and $C_5$. Two methyl ($-CH_3$) substituents are located at positions $C_3$ and $C_5$.
| Position | Functional Group/Substituent |
|---|---|
| $C_1$ | $-OH$ |
| $C_2$ | $-H$ (saturated) |
| $C_3$ | $-OH$, $-CH_3$ |
| $C_4$ | $-H$ (saturated) |
| $C_5$ | $-OH$, $-CH_3$ |
| $C_6$ | Terminal $-CH_3$ |
Step 3: Constructing the Structural Formula
The skeletal structure is built by connecting the six carbons and substituting the specified groups:
$HO-CH_2-CH_2-C(CH_3)(OH)-CH_2-C(CH_3)(OH)-CH_3$
Step 4: Precision Structural Visualization
Final Solution: The structural formula is $HO-CH_2-CH_2-C(OH)(CH_3)-CH_2-C(OH)(CH_3)-CH_3$

I am a retired Executive Engineer from Karnataka Power Corporation. I was giving tuition at my project quarters to Children of my colleagues, for 1st and 2nd Pre-University level(Class 11 & 12 Level), at Sharavathi Hydro Electric Project, Karnataka, for 6 years. I was teaching Physics, Chemistry and Maths. I am a BE (Electrical) Graduate, from Bangalore University during April 1970. I have a very strong passion for Teaching. I used to give practical examples from my field of service, to develop their fundamental concepts/interest and enthuse them to gain a deeper insight into the in the subject. I used to purchase books of foreign authors to portray the lessons through explanatory photos and diagrams, as there were no electronic educational aids, available during that period (1993 to 1998). Throughout my service in Hydel and Thermal Generating Stations, in design, construction, erection, commissioning and maintenance divisions, I was very much involved/got opportunities in imparting the subject knowledge relevant to the work to, orient my subordinates and colleagues. With the present electronic educational aids , I am confident that I will be able to better justice in teaching the subject.
I teach accountancy with a driven practical of the subject. I encourage my students to research the theory through brainstorming sessions. I enable my students to apply the theory effectively through self-evaluation questions, past exam questions, and revision test papers. Periodical reviews and revisions help to progress the syllabus and score high in public exams.
