The major Yoga traditions of India can be summarized briefly as follows:
Raja Yoga – Also called the "Royal Path," focuses on meditation and mind control, mainly based on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Emphasizes the eightfold path (Ashtanga Yoga): Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi.
Hatha Yoga – Focuses on physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and purification practices to prepare the body for higher meditation. It’s the foundation of most modern yoga practices.
Karma Yoga – The Yoga of Action, emphasizing selfless service and performing duties without attachment to results.
Bhakti Yoga – The Yoga of Devotion, focusing on love, devotion, and surrender to a personal deity or divine principle.
Jnana Yoga – The Yoga of Knowledge and Wisdom, focusing on self-inquiry, discernment, and understanding the true nature of the self (Atman).
Tantra Yoga – Integrates rituals, energy control, meditation, and mantra practices to awaken spiritual energy (Kundalini).
