Q5.16:
Draw figure to show the splitting of d orbitals in an octahedral crystal field.

Solution :

Step 1: Theoretical Foundation of Crystal Field Theory (CFT)

In an octahedral coordination entity, the central metal ion is surrounded by six ligands arranged at the vertices of an octahedron. According to Crystal Field Theory [Postulate: Electrostatic interaction], the five $d$-orbitals of the transition metal, which are degenerate in an isolated state, split into two sets due to the asymmetric electrostatic field created by the ligands.

Step 2: Analysis of Orbital Orientation

The splitting depends on the spatial orientation of the $d$-orbitals relative to the incoming ligands along the Cartesian axes ($x, y, z$):

  • $e_g$ set: Consists of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{z^2}$ orbitals. These point directly towards the axial ligands, experiencing greater electrostatic repulsion [Per Coloumbic repulsion principles]. Consequently, they increase in energy.
  • $t_{2g}$ set: Consists of $d_{xy}, d_{yz},$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals. These point between the axes, experiencing lower repulsion from the ligands, thus resulting in lower energy relative to the barycenter.

Step 3: Energetics of Splitting

The energy separation between the two sets is denoted by $\Delta_o$ (Crystal Field Splitting Energy for octahedral fields).

  • The $e_g$ orbitals are raised by $+\frac{3}{5}\Delta_o$ or $+0.6\Delta_o$ from the average energy (barycenter).
  • The $t_{2g}$ orbitals are lowered by $-\frac{2}{5}\Delta_o$ or $-0.4\Delta_o$ from the barycenter.

Step 4: Visual Representation (SVG)

Energy ($E$) $d_{xy}, d_{yz}, d_{zx}, d_{x^2-y^2}, d_{z^2}$ $e_g$ ($d_{x^2-y^2}, d_{z^2}$) $t_{2g}$ ($d_{xy}, d_{yz}, d_{zx}$) $\Delta_o$ Barycenter

Step 5: Mathematical Summary

The total energy split is governed by the relation:

$E(e_g) - E(t_{2g}) = \Delta_o$

Where the stability of the system is affected by the Crystal Field Stabilization Energy (CFSE), calculated as:

$\text{CFSE} = [(-0.4 \times n_{t_{2g}}) + (0.6 \times n_{e_g})] \Delta_o + mP$

(Where $n$ is the number of electrons in the respective set and $mP$ is the pairing energy contribution).

Final Solution: The octahedral splitting results in the destabilization of the $e_g$ orbitals ($+0.6\Delta_o$) and the stabilization of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals ($-0.4\Delta_o$) relative to the spherical crystal field average.

I have been teaching chemistry since 2007. I have well prepared notes, assignments and test series. In my class I first discuss the topic then discuss the questions related to the topic and giving assignment questions on the daily basis. I taught till date more than 2000 students. I had taught in various reputed institution in Chandigarh.i sucessful completed one year online teaching on unacademy as well as running my own institute. On unacademy my rating is 4.62/5. I am teaching ISC and CBSE BOARD for academic as well as for competitive exams. My students are doing MBBS and engineering for renowned institute of India. Many students are well settled in their lives. Teaching chemistry is my passion, I can proudly say that I am teacher by choice. I love to hear comments from my students regarding my teaching methodology for the same I use animated video and gif so students completely indulged in the topic. I always motivate them for their good attempts. My students always get exam questions from my test series. Success can achieve if student retain the topics and do a lot of practice from previous year question for the examination going to appear for. My motto If soldiers sweat in practice then no need to bleed in the war. Do more and more practice. That only give you success.
