Till people who teach Astanga Yoga do not give importance to Yama and Niyama, people will continue misinterpreting not only asana but dhyana, samadhi and moksha too. read less

For common people it is always difficult to understand metaphysical concepts like dhyan, moksha as they do not have dimensions for visualization. That is the reason the concept of Yoga = asanas (yogic postures) have flourished especially in western world. In Astang Yoga, as the previous speakers have said, the first two: Yama ( social code of conduct) and Niyama ( personal code of conduct) are essential to master before learning asanas (yogic postures). The importance of Yama and Niyama can be explained by a simple metaphor. An artist cannot paint canvas which is muddy and filthy, similarly a person cannot become a true yogi unless he practices Yama and Niyama in his daily life. These are also termed as sadvritta or good conduct in Ayurveda. read less

We believe we know more about our concepts, So we will study subjects like Tai Chi, etc.. 2. Western influence about how we study yoga. Most books on yoga now a days are based on the western interpretation based on the body level. Whereas, yoga's work on body(Annamaya kosha) is just a beginning. And a long way to go. Yoga Expert for regular and therapeutic classes

My friend this could be due to mainly two reasons, 1st people are not aware of complete science & philosophy of yoga. they just think of postures as a yoga. 2nd many teachers are just half baked and they don't know the proper way of delivering info and knowledge to enlighten others. -Ananda Bodhi
