The inner sound or mystical sound can be heard in the pratyahara or dharana stage of meditation, which is substantially a higher meditative stage which most people have not achieved. This stage is heard only in deep meditation stages, and as stated in yogic texts like shiva samhita and hatha yoga pradipika says that it could be heard during the karna andhara process or cleaning the ear with the index finger. This is one kind of a dhauti procedure. To begin with you can start concentrating on your breath, and a later stage on your heartbeat to first turn your attention inward into the body.
