Iyengar yoga is an alignment based type of yoga. It is rooted in hatha yoga but Iyengar yoga has a much more thorough approach to the poses. Props are used a lot in Iyengar yoga to support you in the poses and assure that you find the correct alignment and therefore reap the full benefits in the poses.

BKS Iyengar, founder of Iyengar yoga, himself is the best-known exponent of Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is the most traditional form of yoga practice, involving asanas, pranayama, dhyana (includes kriyas, mudras, bandhas) and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika by Swami Swatmarama is considered the first widespread text to have coded this. Popularly, the Hatha Yoga is a practice of yoga that involves exploring poses with a focus on staying in the poses and gently staying aware of your body and breathing.

B. K. S. Iyengar innovated on this form (and in my guess - in an attempt to make yoga more reachable to people of various ages and interests) and introduced several props to help people achieve difficult poses with support. Iyengar yoga makes it possible for people to derive benefit from poses that would not be possible in traditional Hatha yoga through the use of several props.
