Sensex is like a scoreboard for the stock market in India.

• Just like a cricket scoreboard shows how well a team is playing, Sensex shows how well the top 30 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are doing.
• If Sensex goes up, it means most of these companies are doing well and their share prices are increasing.
• If Sensex goes down, it means many of these companies are not doing well and their share prices are falling.

So, Sensex helps people understand the overall mood of the stock market—whether it's happy (bullish) or sad (bearish).
