Q6.3(v):
Write the structures of the following organic halogen compounds.
(v) 2-Bromobutane
Solution :
Step 1: Analyzing the IUPAC Nomenclature
To construct the structure for 2-bromobutane, we decompose the name into its constituent parts [Per IUPAC nomenclature rules]:
- Parent Chain (Butane): The suffix "butane" indicates a saturated hydrocarbon chain consisting of $n=4$ carbon atoms.
- Principal Functional Group/Substituent (Bromo-): The prefix "bromo-" indicates the presence of a bromine atom ($Br$) attached to the main carbon chain.
- Locant (2-): The number "2" specifies the position of the bromine atom on the second carbon atom of the butane chain when numbered to provide the lowest possible locant.
Step 2: Constructing the Carbon Skeleton
The butane backbone is represented as follows:
$C_1 - C_2 - C_3 - C_4$Placement of the substituent $Br$ at position $C_2$ results in:
$CH_3 - CH(Br) - CH_2 - CH_3$Step 3: Visual Representation
Step 4: Chemical Formula Verification
Based on the structure $CH_3CH(Br)CH_2CH_3$, the molecular formula is derived by counting atoms:
- Carbon atoms: $1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4$ ($C_4$)
- Hydrogen atoms: $3 + 1 + 2 + 3 = 9$ ($H_9$)
- Halogen atom: $1$ ($Br$)
The molecular formula is $C_4H_9Br$. This compound is classified as a secondary ($2^\circ$) alkyl halide because the carbon atom attached to the bromine is directly bonded to two other carbon atoms [Per classification of Haloalkanes].
Final Solution: The structure of 2-bromobutane is $CH_3-CH(Br)-CH_2-CH_3$ or in condensed form $CH_3CHBrCH_2CH_3$.

I was giving tuition at my project quarters to Children of my colleagues, for 1st and 2nd Pre-University level(Class 11 & 12 Level), at Sharavathi Hydro Electric Project, Karnataka, for 6 years. I was teaching Physics, Chemistry and Maths. I am a BE (Electrical) Graduate, from Bangalore University during April 1970. I have a very strong passion for Teaching. I used to give practical examples from my field of service, to develop their fundamental concepts/interest and enthuse them to gain a deeper insight into the in the subject. I used to purchase books of foreign authors to portray the lessons through explanatory photos and diagrams, as there were no electronic educational aids, available during that period (1993 to 1998). Throughout my service in Hydel and Thermal Generating Stations, in design, construction, erection, commissioning and maintenance divisions, I was very much involved/got opportunities in imparting the subject knowledge relevant to the work to, orient my subordinates and colleagues. With the present electronic educational aids , I am confident that I will be able to better justice in teaching the subject.

Math class was interesting at times, especially when the topics were explained with real-life examples. The mix of learning and problem-solving made the experience enjoyable and not just about memorizing formulas. This made math feel more flexible and creative rather than just following one method.
