When learning to play the guitar, it's essential to start with the fundamentals to build a strong foundation for your skills. The first thing you should master is proper technique, including: a) How to hold the guitar: Sit or stand comfortably with the guitar resting on your dominant leg (if you're right-handed, the guitar rests on your right leg, and vice versa). Keep your back straight, and ensure the guitar is stable and not sliding around. b)Proper hand positioning: Place your fretting hand (left hand for right-handed players) behind the neck of the guitar, with your thumb positioned roughly in the middle of the neck. Curve your fingers and place them close to the frets for optimal reach and control. For your picking hand (right hand for right-handed players), rest your palm lightly on the bridge of the guitar and use your wrist to make picking motions. c)Basic chords: Learn a few basic chords, such as E major, A major, and D major. Practice forming these chords cleanly and switching between them smoothly. Start with open chords before progressing to more challenging chord shapes. d)Strumming: Practice strumming with a pick or your fingers, focusing on maintaining a steady rhythm and hitting the strings cleanly. Experiment with different strumming patterns and dynamics to develop your sense of timing and groove. e)Basic music theory: Familiarize yourself with basic music theory concepts such as notes, scales, and chord construction. Understanding these fundamentals will help you make sense of what you're playing and enable you to communicate with other musicians. By focusing on these foundational aspects of guitar playing, you'll develop good habits early on and set yourself up for success as you progress to more advanced techniques and repertoire. Remember to practice consistently and be patient with yourself as you learn and improve. read less

The very first thing you should learn is how to read chords. If you play right-handed, this is easy. You hold the guitar up with the body on your lap and its neck in front of your face with one hand, and a chord book with the other hand.

First all 12notes difference and then Open chords are one of the first skills a beginner guitarist will learn. Master just three, and you can play a whole host of popular songs. Aside from attending guitar lessons, following a chord chart is one of the best ways to get acquainted with the basics.
