To be frank, We have known people cracking the prelims in 3 months' time and also the lots who couldn't clear it in years. It totally depends on how prepared are you. In general, given the current pattern, 6 months is suffice for the prelims.

Go for a video posted by D.P Agarwal, former chairman UPSC. Otherwise all fake institution will say 3 or 6 month, even the faculty in such institution never clear mains examination! Please take advice from selected condidtaes!
