UPSC - Group A Services Exams

The list of exams conducted by United Public Service Commission (UPSC) is long in list and is hyped with IAS, IPS and IFS only.

Originally, the list of exams conducted by UPSC is long is list and students tend to be confused which one to apply for.

Here is the list of exams conducted by UPSC and a description for each of them, for students to make the right choice before they apply:

Indian Administrative Service (IAS)

Considered toughest among all exams conducted by UPSC, the IAS exam designates one to perform the following role – handling the daily affairs of the government, contributing in framing and implementation of policy in association with ministry-in-charge, contributing to the final shape of the policy and/or take a final decision with the concurrence of the minister concerned or the cabinet (depending on the gravity of the issue). IAS officers can act as intermediate between public and government by good execution and deliverance skills.

India Foreign Service (IFS)

The full form of IFS exam is Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Exam, conducted by UPSC. Candidates who qualify IFS exam are offered jobs under Indian Ministry of Forest and Environment Sciences. An IFS officer can get placed in 160 Indian embassies across the globe and an be deputed promising roles in the United Nations, UNESCO, World Bank, SAARC and so on. If working within the country, IFS officers are usually placed in passport offices and visa centers.

Indian Police Service (IPS)

Proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the IPS exam are to written by candidates aiming for the following roles:

  • Director General of Police
  • Inspector General of Police
  • Deputy Inspector General of Police
  • Additional Commissioner of Police
  • Superintendent of Police
  • Additional Superintendent of Police
  • IPS Probationer
  • Asst. Superintendent in charge of sub division

Indian P & T Accounts & Finance Service

Candidates clearing the Indian P & T Accounts & Finance Service exam are eligible for jobs in Departments of Telecom and Posts, TRAI and a number of PSUs under the Communications Ministry. Financial posts in the largest PSUs of the country – BSNL and MTNL – are also manned by the officers who crack the Indian P&T Accounts and Finance Service. However, after clearing the exam, this has several set of training starting from Foundation Course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, followed by training in the financial management at the National Institute of Financial Management, Faridabad (48 weeks). The final training before placement happens in Ghaziabad.

Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS)

More popular as IAAS exam, this designated candidates to a central government service, under the Comptroller and Auditor General of India who is free of control from any executive authority. The responsibility of an IAAS officer is to audit the accounts of the Union and State governments, public sector organisations and maintain the accounts of state governments and union territories.

Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise)

This is the largest Group A central service organized by Government of India functioning under Department of Revenue in the Union Minitsry of finance. There are two types of recruitment to the IRS – Direct Recruits and Promoted Officers. Only direct recruits happen by qualifying the civil service exam.

Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS)

One of the gazetted central civil service of the government of India, this is the oldest department of the government under Ministry of Defence.  IDAS officers in service are responsible for maintaining the accounts of defence and controlling budget of defence services. Candidates who qaulify the IDAS exam are trained at, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Meerut and Pune.

Indian Revenue Service (IRS I.T.)

Under the IRS, there are two sub branches – Income tax and Customs and central tax functioning under the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance. For junior level posts in IRS, candidates have to qualify the Combined Graduate level examination by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

Indian Ordnance Factories Service (IOFS)

The IOFS officers work in factories to manufacture defence equipment. They start their role as officers and are later promoted to chairman or director general. Recruitment in IFOS is possible by clearing exams conducted by UPSC and engineering services exam (ESE).

Indian Postal Service

If your goal is to work for the Bharatiya Dak, one of the employment generating sector of the nation then Indian Postal Service exam is from by UPSC is where from you have to start. Only graduates with first class university marks can apply for the postal service exam. While 90 percent of postal openings happen in rural areas, the rest are in urban areas.

Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS)

Functioning under the Department of Expenditure in the Union Ministry of Finance, this requires clearing the civil service exam followed by three training stages – first 10 months, training is at the National Institute of Financial Management, followed by training at the Institute of Government Accounts and Finance (IGNAF) . In the last stage, ICAS officers are sent for On-The-Job-Training (OJT) from INGAF.

Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS)

UPSC conducts the IRTS exam under department of railways with 830 openings. On clearing the civil service exam, training happens at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) National Academy of Direct Taxes (Nagpur), RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration (Bhopal) and Dr. Marri Channa Reddy Human Resource Development Institute (Hyderabad). This follows to the Railway Foundation Course at Railway Staff College (Baroda) now renamed to National Academy of Indian Railways.

Indian Railway Accounts Service(IRAS)

Clearing the UPSC exam, IRAS officers are trained at National Academy of Indian Railways (Vadodra), Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (Missouri, National Academy of Direct Taxes (Nagpur), and NIFM (Faridabad).At the last stage, IRAS candidates are trained  on-field at Zonal Railways, Divisions, Constructions branches and manufacturing units of Indian Railways.

Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS)

Considered youngest among all Group A organized services by Indian Railways, the first IRPS exam was conducted in 1980.Clearing the UPSC, an IRPS officer has to undergo 93-weeks  training program. Recruitment in IRPS is also possible via promotion of Group B Personnel officers working on zonal railways to IRPS.

Post of Assistant Security Commissioner in Railway Protection Force

This role emerged in 1981 and recruitment is conducted in 3 ways – a) UPSC exam, b) Promotion of inspectors of RPF in terms of RPF recruitment rules of 1994 and c) recruiting ex-army officers to 10% posts of Group A officers.

Indian Defence Estates Service (IDES)

Application of IDES starts by clearing the civil service examination conducted by the UPSC. After initial induction, training happens at National Institute of Defence Estates Management (NIDEM),  New Delhi,. The first post offered after training is – Chief Executive Officers in cantonments.

Indian Information Service (Junior Grade)

Controlled by the Ministry of Defence (Directorate of Public Relations), this role involves managing the government of India’s media services for both print and electronic media. To apply, one has to crack the civil service exam. Also, upgrading the officers already working at senior position of IIS of Group B is another form of recruitment in the Indian Information Service.

Indian Trade Service (ITS)

After cracking the UPSC exam, ITS officers are trained at any of the national academies. The second phase of training is imparted at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi for about 8 – 9 months.

ITS officers mandatorily has a provision of  Mid Career Training while serving the role.

Indian Corporate Law Service(ICLS)

ICLS allows one to serve the following positions:

  • Assistant Registrar Of Companies/Assistant Official Liquidator/Assistant Director / Entry-level (Probationer)
  • Deputy Registrar Of Companies/Deputy Official Liquidator/Deputy Director / (Equivalent to) Under Secretary to Government of India
  • Registrar Of Companies/Official Liquidator/Joint Director / (Equivalent to) Deputy Secretary to Government of India
  • Regional Director, MCA (Equivalent to) Joint Secretary to Government of India
  • Director General of Corporate Affairs (Equivalent to) Additional Secretary to Government of India
  • Probational ICLS officers are trained at the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) in Manesar, Haryana Campus. On field training in branch offices is also a part of ICLS program.
