How to prepare for Combined Medical Services (CMS) Exam?

The Combined Medical Services also known as CMS exam is conducted once in every calendar year by UPSC for recruitment as Medical Officer in different organizations such as Indian Railways, Indian and Ordnance Factories operating under the Government of India. The Combined Medical Services examination is conducted in the month of June and notification of the exam is released few months before in March. The CMS exam tests a candidate’s capabilities to join as a medical officer in one of the many government organizations. Candidates who successfully cleared the Written Test are called for the Personality Test or Interview by Union Public Service Commission.

Applicants who successfully clears the entire exam including the Written Test and Interview would be recruited for the following positions:

CMS Exam Pattern

The CMS exam 2015 would consists of 2 parts – Part I and Part II.

The CMS Part I exam is a computer based test consisting of two papers, each carrying a total marks of 250 each (total marks – 500). Each paper of the Part I exam would be of two hours duration.

On the other hand, the CMS Part II exam is Personality Test carrying a total of 100 marks. Applicants who have qualified in the Written test would be eligible for the Personality Test or Interview.

There is penalty for wrong answers in the Objective Type question papers. 1/3 (0.33) marks would be deducted for each wrong answer. So don’t take a chance by trying to guess answers.

Part II | Question Plan

Personality Test or Interview

The Interview or Personality Test would be only for candidates who have successfully cleared the Written Test. The total marks for the Personality Test is 100 marks. The test would test a candidate’s General Knowledge, his/her ability in the academic study and assess the applicant’s Critical Powers of Assimilation, Intellectual Curiosity, Balance of Judgement & Alertness of Mind, Integrity of Character, Ability for Social Cohesion, Initiative and Capability for Leadership.

CMS Preparation Tips

  1. Learn the critical portions/questions of your syllabus
  2. Create a study plan and stick to it!
  3. Clear your doubts well ahead of the exam (via Discussion Forums, Study Groups or ask a CMS Exam Expert)
  4. Play by your strengths and work on your weak areas
  5. Set time for each of the questions. Don’t spend too much time in answering a question
  6. Practice mock/sample or previous question papers and stand a better chance to attempt all questions
  7. Apply the Elimination rule while answering objective questions. Skip a question, if you are not 100% sure of the answer because negative marking can cost you
  8. Be positive and give yourself a break in between your strenuous preparation

CMS Personality Test or Interview Preparation Tips

Clearing the CMS written test is a great achievement in itself. However, the test doesn’t end here and guarantee you the job yet. You will require to pass the Personality Test round to reach your destination as Medical Officer. The Interview which carries a total of 100 marks, is designed to test a candidate’s personality and not just his level of knowledge.

Here are few CMS interview tips for you:

  1. Be positive and keep a calm demeanor
  2. Greet the interviewers before and after the interview
  3. Listen attentively and answer the questions appropriately
  4. If you don’t know the answer of a question admit it frankly
  5. Know the medical topics well as few of the questions would be from there
  6. Talk coherently and most important just be yourself!
