Why is /k/ sometimes spelt with a C, and sometimes with a K?

When C comes with Vowel " a,o,u It's pronounced like K and with "e and i" pronounced like S.

If the next letter is a o or u then C is used to produce sound of K, Similarly if next letter is a consonant then also c is used.
