Poll: In the present scenario, should we learn Queen's English or Simple Spoken English? Our education system has been imparting to inculcate Queen's English, at the expense of Spoken English, in students who study English as a second language. In the melee the students are not able to deliver even one sentence when they pass out from colleges and attend job interviews. I have sailed with Europeans, South Americans, Africans and Asians. They are all good in Spoken English without Queen's English knowledge. English medium schools have multiplied exponentially, a mushroom growth, misleading parents that their children would become "English Parrots". But ground reality is just opposite. Of late even reputed News Papers, who publish articles written by famous columnists, have changed their presentation with simple English. As readers, by and large, don't have time to read papers. Only during Coffee time, they just scroll. No one is there to listen to your lecture. Communication is just sharp and crisp. It may end with SMS style in the long run.

Lets introspect the status of English in the aforementioned linguistically impoverished continents and in a multilingual medley of India... With due respect to your sociolinguistic experience of disparities in the fluency of different speakers in a non-native language;the adaptation of English in the different spheres by the speakers is the core reason... In India, English has neither been fully accepted as a tongue nor has been rejected as a foreign influence. As long as any language is taught as a subject and not as a language; it would be a farfetched goal to have speaker communities on the same latitude on the fluency map. Nonetheless, the Queen's language would never be obsolete as long as the human race does'not begin to underestimate courtesy and civility..as it is synonymous with. Morphological clipping and convenient distortion and irrational abbreviation of content and lexical words could be symptomatic of the degenerative psyche pattern of the present impatient generation with a crisp and sharp mindsets. read less

We should learn correct English both to speak and to write. Accents vary (American, Australian, British, sub accents also). It is important that teachers with good English at their command are there to teach students for all subjects as the medium of instruction especially in technical/Higher Education is English. The English spoken in India is of course a bit influenced by our native tongues(but thats the case everywhere). However those educated in so called convent/Public schools have a good command over English and with hardly any influence of their mother tongue..I may even sound a bit cheeky to say that our English speakers speak more clearly and pronounce correctly....(than the Britishers?) After all today English is not for the Queen & her subjects alone. read less

I believe we should focus on Spoken English. Parents do think that when their child will walk out of the school, he will speak the language like a citizen of a foreign country. I think knowing the language is good but to expect or want someone to be master in other country's language than their own is not right. We should have enough knowledge of the language that it doesn't become a barrier in one's growth as a professional. We should not stress on thus becoming "English Parrots". This mindset has to be inculcated in the parents. Rather than boycotting any language which some of the politicians do, we should talk intellectual and should narrate the importance of learning this language along with mastering your native language in the youth and the leaders who govern them. read less

Of course learning more in advance eventually nourishes other part of life as well. Hence as per my opinion, one needs to learn both Spoken and Queen's English. The first one to take care of regular day-to-day requirements in personal and professional life and the second to stand out of the crowd. read less
