What Is The Crucial Difference Between Ordinary Communication And Effective Communication?

Most of us seem to be under the wrong impression that Communication Skills is all that is required to get a job or to get a promotion in a job. Unfortunately, Communication alone will not get you a job. It is actually ‘Effective Communication’ which alone can get you a job or a promotion. Almost all of us possess Ordinary Communication Skills. It is only those Successful Individuals who possess the knack of Effective Communication who corner all those Good Jobs and Promotions. So now we come to the crucial question: What is the important difference between Ordinary Communication Skills and Effective Communication Skills?

To understand this important difference, we need to take two steps backwards and understand ‘What is Communication?’ and ‘What is the Purpose of Communication?’

Communication is the exchange of thoughts, ideas, feelings, emotions, facts, figures and information between 2 or more persons, with the help of Words or Body Gestures.

The Purpose of Communication is to satisfy some of our needs or that of others. This gives us a scope to define accurately what could be described as Effective Communication.

As a result of our Communication, if our needs or others’ needs are satisfied, well, it could definitely be classified as Effective Communication! On the other hand, if our Communication fails to satisfy any such need, it is not Effective Communication. It could only be described as a Defective Communication because we have wasted the Words, Time and Energy of both the parties.

Remember, there is no such thing as an Ordinary Communication. It is either an Effective Communication or a Defective Communication. There is no in-between category.

That’s why it has become highly imperative that we understand this concept clearly and upgrade our Communication into Effective Communication, at the earliest.
