1. Compliment vs. Complement

  • Compliment is a word used to express praise, admiration, or respect. It is what you say when you appreciate someone or something.

    • Example: "She gave him a genuine compliment on his new haircut."

  • Complement means to add to something in a way that enhances or improves it. It refers to two things that go well together.

    • Example: "The spicy sauce was the perfect complement to the grilled chicken."

    • Helpful tip: Compliment has an "i" for "I like it" and complement has an "e" for "enhances".

2. Empathy vs. Sympathy

  • Sympathy is the feeling of pity or sorrow for someone else's misfortune. It's about feeling for someone.

    • Example: "I have great sympathy for the victims of the disaster."

  • Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. It's about feeling with someone and putting yourself in their shoes.

    • Example: "A good therapist must have empathy to truly understand their clients' struggles."

    • *Analogy: Sympathy is seeing a person drowning and feeling sad. Empathy is getting in the water with them and feeling what it's like to struggle. *

3. Imply vs. Infer

  • Imply means to suggest something without saying it directly. The person who is speaking or writing is the one who implies.

    • Example: "She implied that she was unhappy by sighing and looking away."

  • Infer means to deduce or conclude information from evidence and reasoning. The person who is listening or reading is the one who infers.

    • Example: "From her tone of voice, I inferred that she was upset."

    • Key difference: The speaker implies, and the listener infers.

4. Effect vs. Affect

  • Affect is almost always a verb, meaning to have an influence on something.

    • Example: "The bad weather will affect our travel plans."

  • Effect is almost always a noun, meaning the result or outcome of an action.

    • Example: "The medication had an immediate effect on his pain."

    • Helpful tip: Affect is an action, effect is the end result.

5. Bored vs. Boring

  • Bored is an adjective that describes a feeling. You feel bored because of something or someone else.

    • Example: "I am bored with this lecture."

  • Boring is an adjective that describes a quality of a person, thing, or event. It describes what makes you feel bored.

    • Example: "This lecture is so boring."

    • Note: The subject is doing the action of being boring. The person is feeling bored.
