Writing task tips for IELTS General and Academic

Srividya N.

Students generally tend to use and to some extent, even overuse certain adverbs such as 'very,' 'very much' and 'really.' It often does not help display one's lexical resource.
Use a few of these intensifying adverbs to improve your speaking and writing skills.

Example:
- Absolutely
- Utterly
- Deeply
- Downright
- Entirely
- Fully
- Highly
- Particularly
- Potentially
- Significantly
- Strongly
- Strictly
- Thoroughly
- Totally
- Ridiculously
- Undoubtedly
- Vaguely
- Widely

Intensifying adverbs collocate with certain specific adjectives and verbs. Use them wisely and correctly. They also help you increase your word score in the written tasks.

A few examples are given below:

- It was a ridiculous movie.

- His was an utterly distasteful speech.

- That is downright rude behaviour.

- His family is entirely dependant on his meagre earnings.

- Heavily armed soldiers guard our borders.

- This industry uses potentially hazardous chemicals.

- We can significantly reduce emission levels by adopting these measures.

- He thoroughly prepared for the test.

All the best to all my students appearing for the IELTS this weekend!
