Well, considering the season changes and the effect of these changes on the strings, I would recommend changing strings for every 4-5 months would do better.

You can't make them softer, at least not without affecting the tone. You can try lighter gauges, tuning down to lower tension, switching from acoustic to electric , switch to classical guitar (with nylon strings) etcetera, but these are just options to make the strings more pliable.

In 12 twelve string guitar, the number of string names are not 12. It is the same 6 names in same order similar to a 6 string Guitar. The order of notes are E A D G B E as followed in standard tuning. The difference is that, there are two strings per note.
