It depends upon practice. Normally, one can learn the basic skill in 9 months to 1 year (if have practice regulerly).

It is a team effort. Only trainer cannot accelerate the progress. Trainer has to consistently spend time on practicing the lessons learnt during previous sessions. On an average it will take 9 - 12 months to learn the basic skills. Thanks spardha team

The basic taala system of Hindustani and Carnatic music is different. In Carnatic they don't have the concept of Theka as in Hindustani music. So accompaniment style changes. But it's all in the artiste who plays the instrument and not the instrument. So no harm in experimenting as long as you keep the art form pure.
