When I'm alone, I speak English perfectly. I write even better. But when speaking in front of others, I always fall short of words. I lack confidence and think that they'll make fun of me. What should I do?

This nervousness can be removed Ist by gradual practice and then by requesting the person with whom you want to speak in English like' Please don't mind if my English is not good' the other person will say he will never mind and encourage you. Suppose you learn to ride bicycle and fall down you never give up if the people laugh at you because you are committed. Now if people laugh at you it is their negative approach. The answer is simple, work on your confidence. You can do confidence building activities; go talk to a stranger, try starting a conversation with them on something mutual. For example, if you are waiting in line for something try to strike a conversation with the person in front of or behind you. Since both of you will be in the same situation, finding mutual grounds of agreement or even grievances won't be difficult. Be warned that not everyone will take kindly to your attempts at conversation but that's part of the learning experience. Second, based on your comments that you write English well, there shouldn't be any reason for other people to make fun of you. Have faith, speak without fear. read less
