If a word has two pronunciations ( I don't think many words have more than 2 pronunciations), standard dictionaries usually list them in the order of their popular usage - the first variation usually is the most widely used form. In certain other cases, the American pronunciation differs from the British pronunciation and that would be indicated clearly in dictionaries. Ex. Vitamin - vi-tuh-min (Brit. Pro.) and vy-tuh-min ( Americ. Pro.) Sometimes, if the same word has two different pronunciations, you have to carefully verify whether they have the same meaning or different meanings. E.g. resume - if pronounced as "rizume", it means " to begin again after a break", whereas if it is used to mean "a summary of details or a curriculum vitae ", it should be pronounced as "'rez-yuu-may", which point is not properly followed by many youngsters attending interviews and so they get a poor rating because of this pronunciation mistake. Hope all those who read this will guard themselves against this mistake. read less

There are two types of English spoken all over the world that is American English and British English. As we are Indian..We speak British English. So go for British Pronunciation.

I am in a place called Kannamangalam.  What is the correct usage? 'I am in Kannamangalam' or ' I am at Kannamangalam'.

Why modern-day writers have discarded using 'at' for villages.

Since "Kannamangalam" is a place, you need to use 'in'. Using 'at' will make your sentence sound off. So, you should say, "I am in Kannamangalam".
