"Touch Wood" in UK or "Knock On Wood" in US. They are mentioned in order to avoid bad luck while talking about a person's fortunes, prosperity etc: Does one have to really "Touch Wood" (or "Knock On Wood) or just say it? Thanks in advance, Superstitiously Yours................................

It’s a medieval superstition that has gathered strength over the years among those who are prone to being superstitious. Today, some superstitious people just utter the phrase without touching wood but others actually touch wood to feel more secure.

No , you don't have to touch the wood, it's just an expression, you only say that.

Well, one did have to touch/knock on the wood because of a pagan belief that malevolent spirits inhabited wood, and that if you expressed a hope for the future you should touch, or knock on, wood to prevent the spirits from hearing and presumably preventing your hopes from coming true.

By touching the wood means that people are seeking the protection of wood God ( who lived in trees) to prevent bad luck. The belief is that touching the wood would ward off evil as one is touching the wood of the cross.

Everybody has his own beliefs and principles in his life and we feel that these beliefs work sometime but the fact is different. In fact, it is the only programming of our sub-conscious mind which converts the imagination into reality.

There is no account of origin for these phrases touch wood or knock on wood. Both implies the same meaning and it's a belief that some good spirit resides in woods or trees, by tapping it or touching it our bad luck goes away. It's upto individual belief.

There are many idioms, phrases and quotes on shoes. "It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out; it's the grain of sand in your shoe" "A woman carries her clothes. But the shoe carries the woman" Can You Share an interesting shoe-incident in your life or an idiom or a phrase? A shoe anecdote: I had to trek bare-footed to my school till my school final. Three kilometers from my house to a Railway station, then travel by train, and finally from there to school by walk along the railway track. Once my neighbour's son of my age bought a pair of new branded shoes. It didn't fit him, the shoe that fits one person pinches another. One fine morning his mother told me to try it out and it neither pinched or bit me. I was very happy to get into my neighbour's shoes. She told me that she would take her son's permission and offer it to me. The permission was granted and the message was passed on to my mother. I used to visit her house daily thinking that she would tell me to take it. To my bad luck she forgot the mega offer to me. My ego didn't permit me to ask her. Crying baby gets the milk. I didn’t cry, It went on for one year. The shoe gathered dust and finally disappeared, might be to a dust-bin. I bought variety of imported shoes once I started earning. But that Longing of my neighbour's shoes, which fitted me without any pinch, still PINCHES me. No state of the art shoes would replace that longing.
