I am a tutor and I get good responses from students for communication training (advanced) and spoken English training. These students who are into communication training category have decent to good English skills but still need improvement. So they are constantly asking me for speaking training / spoken only. What topics do I cover for such students who needs only topics to talk?

Hello Amsa, I would suggest you can give them short stories for reading and then you can ask them to present it in front of the class but give them only 5 to mins for preparation, you know like impromptu speech. The other option is you can give extempore topics to your students for speaking exercises. Then you can give current topics for presentations. You can have jam sessions, like group discussion. You can also give role play cues to the students. All these activities can help them in speaking. read less

Ask students to pick a topic of their choice (anything that interests them and they are comfortable with it). Let them talk on that topic - listen to them and correct them as they keep talking.

The first day of school, memorable moment etc. and then give them the topics like corruption, poverty, child labour etc. but you have to be prepared for that because it's you who will correct them in case of mistakes. read less

Hello Amsa, Coaching, correcting or improving students who are good or decent with communication should not be a very tough task. These students just need three basic inputs:- 1) Enhancing vocabulary- If I am good with communication and want to excel and sound more impressive then an extended vocab would come in handy. 2) Living the language - Let's agree on one thing that if someone just want to know how to speak fluently in English without any interest in the language then he/she won't be able to get proficiency over it. Encourage your students to live the language,as in watch English movies/series and listen to good English music. 3) Ending Indianism- One last thing that would help your students to build a great base and structure of the language will be practicing translations as much as possible. Right feedback and followup on translations will give them life long confidence over the language and also end Indianism completely. read less

Ask them to pick a topic of their own and speak about the same without the usage of any other language words like (e.g.Hindi) ki, toh, phir, chal, theek hai, etc.

Vocabulary training is quite different. It needs more practice. I suggest practice the same in a group & make the video for the same & show the students to improve. Once the students are comfortable involve them in Role play. These technique will certainly help.

From what I have experienced over the last two years, is that students will write wonderfully but will fumble and make errors when asked to speak. Ask them to speak in English with each other, like start from small things like complementing each other on their clothes, hair, perfume, etc. This way they can start a conversation and English and then automatically it continues to be a considerably long conversation. Let them make errors at first, simultaneous sessions on grammar will help. Also, what others are saying, ask them to read a short story and then let them present it after 10 mins in their own language. read less

"Touch Wood" in UK or "Knock On Wood" in US. They are mentioned in order to avoid bad luck while talking about a person's fortunes, prosperity etc: Does one have to really "Touch Wood" (or "Knock On Wood) or just say it? Thanks in advance, Superstitiously Yours................................
It’s a medieval superstition that has gathered strength over the years among those who are prone to being superstitious. Today, some superstitious people just utter the phrase without touching wood but others actually touch wood to feel more secure.
