This is the preparation phase — the cell is not dividing yet, but it's getting ready to divide.
It has 3 stages:

🟢 G₁ Phase (Gap 1)

  • Cell grows in size

  • Makes proteins, enzymes & organelles

  • Checks if everything is okay to move to the next step
    ✔️ Checkpoint present to control cell division

🧬 S Phase (Synthesis Phase)

  • DNA replication happens here

  • Each chromosome makes a copy → now you have sister chromatids
    🧪 Centrioles also duplicate in animal cells

🔵 G₂ Phase (Gap 2)

  • Cell continues to grow

  • Prepares for mitosis by making special proteins and microtubules
    ✔️ Final checks before division

⚡ 2. M Phase (Mitotic Phase)

Now the actual division of the nucleus and cytoplasm happens. It has 2 parts:

(A) Karyokinesis = Division of Nucleus

Divided into 4 stages:

🌀 Prophase

  • Chromosomes condense & become visible

  • Nuclear membrane breaks down

  • Spindle fibers start forming

📍 Metaphase

  • Chromosomes line up in the middle (equator) of the cell

  • Spindle fibers attach to the centromere of each chromosome

🔀 Anaphase

  • Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles

  • Now each side gets an identical set of chromosomes

🏁 Telophase

  • Chromosomes start de-condensing

  • Nuclear envelope reforms around each set

  • Cell has two nuclei now — one at each end

(B) Cytokinesis = Division of Cytoplasm

  • In animal cells: done by cleavage (furrow)

  • In plant cells: done by cell plate formation

✅ End Result:

  • 2 identical daughter cells

  • Same number of chromosomes as the parent cell (if mitosis)
