Nitrogen fixation means concerting atmospheric Nitrogen molecule N2 into Ammonia for plant utilisation because the plant needs Nitrogen minerals. Still, it can't take as N2, so fixation of nitrogen is done by bacteria present in the soil they convert N2 to NH3 & plant take it through their roots.
