Q5:
Is the function $f$ defined by $f(x) = \begin{cases} x, & \text{if } x \le 1 \\ 5, & \text{if } x > 1 \end{cases}$ continuous at $x = 0$? At $x = 1$? At $x = 2$?
Solution :
Definition of Continuity
A function $f(x)$ is said to be continuous at a point $x = c$ if and only if:
$\lim_{x \to c^-} f(x) = \lim_{x \to c^+} f(x) = f(c)$
Analysis at $x = 0$
Since $0 < 1$, we use the definition $f(x) = x$.
- Left-Hand Limit (LHL): $\lim_{x \to 0^-} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 0} (x) = 0$
- Right-Hand Limit (RHL): $\lim_{x \to 0^+} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 0} (x) = 0$
- Functional Value: $f(0) = 0$ [Since $0 \le 1$]
Since $\text{LHL} = \text{RHL} = f(0)$, the function is continuous at $x = 0$.
Analysis at $x = 1$
This is a potential point of discontinuity as the function definition changes.
- LHL: $\lim_{x \to 1^-} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 1} (x) = 1$
- RHL: $\lim_{x \to 1^+} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 1} (5) = 5$
- Functional Value: $f(1) = 1$ [Since $x \le 1$ includes $1$]
Since $\lim_{x \to 1^-} f(x) \neq \lim_{x \to 1^+} f(x)$, the limit does not exist at $x=1$. Therefore, the function is discontinuous at $x = 1$.
Analysis at $x = 2$
Since $2 > 1$, we use the definition $f(x) = 5$.
- LHL: $\lim_{x \to 2^-} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 2} (5) = 5$
- RHL: $\lim_{x \to 2^+} f(x) = \lim_{x \to 2} (5) = 5$
- Functional Value: $f(2) = 5$ [Since $2 > 1$]
Since $\text{LHL} = \text{RHL} = f(2)$, the function is continuous at $x = 2$.
Visual Representation
Final Solution: The function is continuous at $x = 0$ and $x = 2$, but discontinuous at $x = 1$.
