Q8.27:
Name a suitable technique of separation of the components from a mixture of calcium sulphate and camphor.
Solution :
Given Mixture Composition
The mixture consists of two primary chemical species with distinct physical properties:
- Camphor ($C_{10}H_{16}O$): An organic bicyclic monoterpene ketone characterized by high vapor pressure at room temperature and the ability to undergo sublimation—a direct phase transition from solid to gas without entering the liquid phase [Per the kinetic molecular theory of solids].
- Calcium Sulphate ($CaSO_4$): An inorganic ionic salt. It possesses a high melting point and lacks significant volatility at standard atmospheric pressure and temperature [Per ionic lattice energy principles].
Step 1: Theoretical Basis for Separation
The selection of the separation technique is predicated on the differential volatility of the components. Because camphor is a volatile solid and calcium sulphate is a non-volatile inorganic salt, thermal energy can be applied to selectively transition the camphor into the vapor phase, leaving the non-volatile residue behind [Reference: Phase Equilibrium and Sublimation Laws].
Step 2: Operational Procedure
The chosen technique is Sublimation. The procedure is executed as follows:
- Place the powdered mixture of camphor and calcium sulphate in a china dish.
- Cover the dish with a perforated filter paper and invert a glass funnel over it.
- Seal the stem of the funnel with cotton wool.
- Apply controlled heat to the base of the china dish.
- As the temperature rises, camphor molecules gain sufficient kinetic energy to overcome intermolecular forces, transitioning directly into the gaseous state.
- The camphor vapors ascend and contact the cool inner walls of the funnel, where they undergo desublimation (deposition) to re-form solid camphor crystals.
- Calcium sulphate remains in the china dish, as it does not sublime at these temperatures.
Visual Representation of Sublimation Setup
Analytical Summary
| Component | Physical Property | Method of Separation |
|---|---|---|
| Camphor | Sublimable (Volatile) | Sublimation |
| Calcium Sulphate | Non-sublimable (Non-volatile) | Residue Collection |
Final Solution: The suitable technique for separating the components from a mixture of calcium sulphate and camphor is Sublimation, based on the property that camphor is a volatile solid while calcium sulphate is non-volatile.
