Q8.18 (b):
Give a brief description of the principles of the following techniques taking an example in each case. (b) Distillation

Solution :

1. Theoretical Principle of Distillation

Distillation is a fundamental physical separation technique employed to purify liquids or to separate components of a liquid mixture based on differences in their boiling points. The process involves heating a liquid mixture until it vaporizes, followed by the immediate cooling and condensation of the vapors back into a liquid state in a separate vessel. [Per Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures and Raoult’s Law, the composition of the vapor phase differs from that of the liquid phase if the components have distinct vapor pressures at a given temperature].

2. Mechanism and Apparatus

The separation relies on the fact that the liquid with the lower boiling point (more volatile) transitions into the vapor state at a lower temperature than the liquid with the higher boiling point. By carefully controlling the temperature, the volatile component is collected as a distillate, while the non-volatile impurities or the less volatile component remain in the original flask.

3. Exemplary Case: Purification of Aniline and Water

Consider a mixture of a liquid organic compound and a non-volatile impurity (e.g., Aniline mixed with salt/non-volatile contaminants).

  • Step A: Vaporization: The crude mixture is placed in a round-bottomed flask and heated. As the temperature reaches the boiling point of the organic component (Aniline, $BP \approx 184^\circ C$), it transforms into a gaseous state.
  • Step B: Condensation: The hot vapors enter the water-cooled condenser. The cold jacket of the condenser absorbs latent heat, facilitating the phase change from vapor to liquid.
  • Step C: Collection: The purified liquid (distillate) is collected in a separate receiver flask, effectively separating it from the non-volatile residue remaining in the distillation flask.

4. Summary of Conditions

Condition Application
Boiling Point Difference $\Delta T > 20^\circ C - 30^\circ C$ is ideal.
Thermal Stability Substances must not decompose at their boiling points.

Final Solution: Distillation is a technique used to separate a volatile liquid from non-volatile impurities or to separate two or more liquids with significantly different boiling points by the process of differential vaporization and subsequent condensation.

Expert Chemistry Mentor for IIT-JEE | NEET | CBSE – 18+ Years of Experience Hi, I’m Anuranjita. I am a Senior Chemistry Expert with over 18 years of experience at India's leading institutes like Aakash, FIITJEE, and TIME and hold an M.Tech. degree from Anna University, Chennai—one of the top 10 engineering universities in India. I have refined a highly structured, result-oriented teaching methodology designed to crack • IIT-JEE (Main & Advanced) • NEET • Score 100% in CBSE Board exams. (Class 11 & 12 – Chemistry) Over the years, I have trained thousands of students, many of whom have successfully secured admissions into AIIMS, IITs, NITs, and other top medical and engineering colleges across India. Here is what makes my classes uniquely effective: • Interactive and concept-driven teaching • Focus on building strong fundamentals • Personalized learning based on each student’s pace • Regular doubt-clearing sessions & Chapter-wise tests • Exam-oriented tips and problem-solving strategies • The "Exclusive 5" Batch Model (Personalized Attention) Unlike massive online batches with thousands of students where individual voices get lost, my classes are strictly limited to a maximum of 5 students. This ensures that every single student receives 1-on-1 level attention, and I can monitor each student's real-time progress, strengths, and weaknesses. • Rigorous Testing & PYQ Practice: Chapter-wise tests modeled strictly on the latest NTA patterns, alongside exhaustive solving of past years' questions (PYQs). Looking forward to helping you master chemistry! Best Regards Anuranjita
