Q8.19:
Describe the method, which can be used to separate two compounds with different solubilities in a solvent S.
Solution :
Theoretical Foundation: Fractional Crystallization
The separation of two compounds with different solubilities in a specific solvent $S$ is achieved via the method of Fractional Crystallization. This technique relies on the principle that substances exhibit varying degrees of solubility at different temperatures, and that the rate of crystallization for different solutes will differ when a saturated solution is cooled.
Step 1: Preparation of the Saturated Solution
The mixture containing the two compounds (let us designate them $A$ and $B$) is dissolved in the minimum possible quantity of solvent $S$ at its boiling point [Per the principle of increased kinetic energy facilitating solute-solvent interactions]. This creates a nearly saturated solution.
Step 2: Controlled Cooling and Fractional Precipitation
As the hot saturated solution is allowed to cool gradually, the compound with lower solubility (e.g., compound $A$) reaches its saturation limit first and begins to crystallize out of the solution. The more soluble compound (e.g., compound $B$) remains in the dissolved state (mother liquor) [Justification: Solubility $S \propto \text{Temperature } T$].
Step 3: Separation via Filtration
The crystals of compound $A$ are separated from the mother liquor by filtration using a Buchner funnel or filter paper. The filtrate contains the more soluble compound $B$.
Step 4: Recovery of the Second Component
The mother liquor is concentrated by heating until a new saturated solution is achieved. It is then cooled again, or evaporated to dryness, to isolate compound $B$. If the compounds still contain traces of each other, the process is repeated through Recrystallization, where the crystals are dissolved in a minimal amount of hot solvent and recrystallized to achieve higher purity [Per the Law of Mass Action regarding precipitation equilibria].
Comparative Analysis of Solubility Characteristics
| Parameter | Compound A (Less Soluble) | Compound B (More Soluble) |
|---|---|---|
| Saturation Point | Reached earlier during cooling | Reached later or requires evaporation |
| Phase State | Solid phase (Crystals) | Liquid phase (Mother Liquor) |
Final Solution: The method employed is Fractional Crystallization, which utilizes the differences in solubility of two compounds at varying temperatures to isolate them through sequential cooling, precipitation, and filtration steps.
