In case of a rotational motion (Rigid body Dynamics), we can always apply Newtan's laws of motion about an axis passing through the Center of Mass of body. Why? Why can't we always apply Newtans' laws of motion about an axis about which the rigid body happens to be in pure rotation?

NLM is invalid for non-inertial frames of ref.

For a body in rotation the center of mass is the only point which remains in transient motion, rest others are in rotation

1) newtons laws of motion are valid only in inertial frame of reference,i.e, a frame in which there is zero acceleration(though velocity may have non-zero but constant value) . 2) the whole mass of the body can be assumed to be at its centre of mass and the object can then be treated as a point object...

Net force = Ma, a is acceleration of COM, SImilarly Net Torque=I A, A = angular acceleration of body about an axis throught COM. If you want to consider some other axis then you have to do many other calculations which can be avoided if you consider axis through centre of mass as Weight acts through com whose Torque would be zero therefore minimizing calculations. read less

One more thing if you want to apply newton's laws of motion in a non inertial frame then you need to apply an extra force named as pseudo force like the centrifugal force( as in case of circular motion... The inertial frame of refrence is frame which has no acceleration i.e if we consider a acceleratometre in that frame it shows zero reading...but in circular motion or rotational motion there may be constant speed rotation but the chance in direction of velocity results acceleration. it is because the whole mass of the body is supposed to be concentrated at the centre of mass and the force at the centre of mass cause an acceleration of the rigid body.so we need to apply the newton's law about an axis passing through centre of mass. if we apply newton's law about an axis...
