About IIT

IIT stands for Indian Institutes of Technology is an autonomous public academic institute with 23 campuses across India.

The IITs is a successful visionary venture of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

The oldest in the family of IITs is the Kharagpur branch, set up in 1950.

The functioning of all the IITs is governed by Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 where the Indian president is the most powerful dignitary in the management of IIT, serving as the ex-officio visitor. Another government dignitary, the Union HRD Minister is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council.

Ranked best when it comes to engineering colleges in India, the IITs is a dream come true for science stream students. In 2015, media publication house Outlook India’s top engineering colleges had 7 IITs in count.
