Preparing for IELTS while holding down a full-time job can feel impossible. Evenings are short, weekends fill up, and long commutes leave little energy for practice tests. The good news is that online IELTS classes remove the travel time, so you can put those hours into study instead. Here is a realistic six-week plan built around a normal working week.
Before you start: set your baseline
Take one full practice test under timed conditions, ideally in the format you will sit (paper or computer-delivered). Note your weakest skill and the score you need. Every decision in the plan below should come back to that gap. Write your test date on a calendar and count back six weeks so the plan has a firm end point.
Weeks 1–2: Learn the test, build routines
- Book two or three live sessions a week at times you can actually keep, such as early mornings or after dinner.
- Spend 20 minutes a day on one skill: Listening on Monday, Reading on Tuesday, and so on.
- Learn the question types and the instructions so nothing surprises you later.
Weeks 3–4: Target your weakest areas
Now shift most of your time to the skill holding you back. If it is Writing, aim for one Task 1 and one Task 2 response each week and get detailed feedback on both. If it is Speaking, use your sessions for timed Part 2 talks and Part 3 discussions. Keep the other skills ticking over with short daily drills, and keep a simple log of the errors you repeat most often.
Weeks 5–6: Full mocks and fine-tuning
- Sit one full mock test each weekend, in one sitting, with strict timing.
- Review every mistake with your tutor rather than just checking the score.
- In the final week, ease off new material and focus on timing, rest and confidence.
Make the plan fit your job
Use small pockets of time well: listen to podcasts on the commute, read a news article at lunch, and write down new vocabulary on your phone. Protect your sleep in the last week, because tired candidates make careless mistakes. If a busy work week throws you off schedule, move sessions rather than skipping them. Flexible scheduling is one of the biggest advantages of online study.
