Mahavadi Vasu Viswanadha Sastry is a distinguished Carnatic violinist, vocalist, and composer, widely admired for his technical brilliance, emotive playing, and depth of musical understanding. He is an All India Radio Graded Artist and a proud recipient of the “Swarabrahma Award” from the Government of Telangana. He has also been honored with multiple prestigious titles including “Kalaimamani Kumari A. Kanyakumari Award” from Kalasagaram, Hyderabad, “Bharata Yuva Vaayidya Ratna”, and “Sangeeta Vaayidya Ratna,” recognizing his contribution to Indian classical music. Born to Late Brahmasri Mahavadi Viswanadham and Vidushi Smt. Mahavadi Sita Mahalakshmi, Vasu hails from a rich and illustrious musical lineage. His grandfather, Vidwan Sri Mahavadi Venkatappaiah Sastry, and the legendary Padma Vibhushan, Sangeeta Kalanidhi Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, form an inspiring backdrop to his musical journey. Vasu began learning music under the guidance of his mother and further refined his skills under the tutelage of Sri N.C. Ramanujacharyulu Garu. He then underwent rigorous Gurukulavasam training for over 11 years under Late Sri Akella Mallikarjuna Sharma Garu, a traditional immersive method that deeply shaped his musical discipline, understanding, and artistry. Over the years, Vasu has performed in more than 1,700 concerts across India in solo, duet, and accompaniment formats. His repertoire spans Carnatic music concerts, dance programs, fusion presentations, Harikatha performances, and Namasankeerthanam, earning acclaim for combining technical mastery with bhava (emotion). As a composer, Vasu has contributed music for traditional dance forms, including Perini dance, Telangana dance traditions, Andhranatyam and Kuchipudi, blending classical depth with innovative expression. He has accompanied several eminent musicians on prestigious stages, gaining recognition for his artistic sensitivity and versatility. A dedicated teacher, he runs the Mahavadi School of Music, mentoring numerous students in Carnatic vocal and violin for over a decade.
