Free style dance is when you start dancing without choreograph a song.And the steps use in dancing they came from different dance styles .Not a single dance style use in freestyle dance. For example when you start dancing on a song you use different types of step but those steps are came from different different style like you use a step of hip-hop and then use bollywood step  and other dance styles step.

These steps are  coming at a time when you start dancing . This is free style

What is the right type of dance class to learn basic party / wedding dancing?

The best dance styles for parties and wedding are Bollywood dance and Bhangra if you are interested in dance then you should also learn Hip-hop dance. Basic Hiphop foundation are easy to learn.
