Spend a few years on acoustic guitar first to get a grasp of the fretboard and all the scale shapes ,arpeggios ,triads,chord inversions and build finger strength and control as much as possible..then move on to an electric where you'll need to control the sounds by getting to know about the technical aspects like gain, noise gates, amps and cabinets, effects like distortion ,reverb ,chorus,etc..its a whole different world when it comes to play the electric guitar read less

Learn some basic chords in the open position from a book or online. if you are keen on pursuing playing guitar find a teacher near your area and start classes. You will need a teacher to ell you if you are doing things correctly. Once you get past the initial stage of being comfortable with an acoustic guitar its time to buy and electric and try the same thing on the electric. Follow up with exercises for improving your playing. read less
