Is it necessary to start with acoustic guitar before one switches to electric one? I have had no prior experience with any musical instrument but I am keen on learning. Please help.

No, Actually both are similar in basic way. What matters is what genre you prefer to play after basics , can be rock on electric or folk on acoustic There's a lot to explore . If you have low budget then start learning with acoustic and afterwards learn new styles on electric.
