you can learn guitar by yourself but it will take many years to at least understand how music works but if you already have a good fundaton in music then you can learn it quickly (eg: i started as a keyboard and rhythm player but i learned guitar by my self , i took online help too) but yes it will still take much time................................. its always recommended to have a good teacher or atleast a friend or senior who knows how to play guitar... there are many lessons online. you can follow those lessons. but you still need someone to tell you that you are doing that thing wrong. its not always possible to know what are you doing wrong. i always say everyone that with being good at some concept or technique while learning you should also be good at pointing what you are doing wrong .. ................................you can also join disscussion forums and fb groups and you can ask for feedback by posting a video of you playing. learning is a never ending process. you will not stick to one teacher whole life but you really need a "good" teacher to help you in begining. .....................after that you will find many teachers and you can learn from them for free they are your musician friends . you can learn something from your local drummer friend ,a bassist ,a keyboard player or even from a beginner guitarist. ............................. its hard to follow online lessons regularly without knowing what you are doing wrong and how much did you improve.you will quit after sometime .,,,,,,,,,,,,,,............. here is a tip for you if you are learning by your own from online lessons. you will find many videos and article lessons. but read and watch only one or two every week and practise those for whole week. then after that learn other one or two lessons and practise them for another week. its not necssary to watch only two videos a week you just have to be carefull not to learn many things at one time.... also don't spend time in watching videos and reading articles. spend time in listening and practising.
