Sensex stands for Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. It’s like a thermometer that tells us how healthy or sick the Indian stock market is feeling.
It shows the average performance of 30 big companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). These companies are leaders in different sectors like banking, IT, energy, FMCG, etc.
Why is Sensex important?
If Sensex goes up, it means most of these top companies are doing well → investors are confident → economy is growing.
If Sensex goes down, it means companies are struggling → investors are worried → economy might be slowing.
So, it reflects the mood of the market and helps people decide whether to invest, hold, or sell.
Example to understand Sensex:
Imagine that you’re tracking the performance of your top 30 students in a class. You create a scorecard that shows their average marks every week.If the average score increases, you know your class is doing well.
If it drops, you know something’s wrong—maybe exams were tough or students need help.
Sensex works the same way—but instead of students, it tracks companies like:
Reliance Industries, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Asian Paints
If these companies do well, Sensex rises. If they struggle, Sensex falls.
