On applying a force on a body kept at rest, there is a force opposing the motion. This opposing force is the friction force and the direction is opposite of the applying force. As long as body is in rest static friction force works. This is adjustable force, which increases upto a limit called limiting friction force. But as the body moves the contact surfaces at molecular level melt and the friction force (kinetic friction) decreases . Hence relative motion between the surfaces is easier. read less
