Raj Yoga is often called the “royal path of yoga.” The idea behind Raj Yoga is that it mainly focuses on the mind. While other forms of yoga may work more on the body or on rituals, Raj Yoga guides a person towards controlling the mind and reaching inner peace through meditation, concentration, and discipline. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras describe this path in detail through the “Ashtanga Yoga” – the eight limbs of yoga, which include yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and finally samadhi.
Now, when we talk about whether Raj Yoga can be considered the supreme form of yoga, Patanjali gives us a very clear definition of yoga in his famous sutra: “Yogaḥ citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ”, which means “Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.” Raj Yoga directly works on this goal because its whole purpose is to control the restless thoughts of the mind and bring it into a state of stability and silence. In that sense, yes, Raj Yoga can be considered the supreme or highest form of yoga according to Patanjali, because it directly fulfills the main definition of what yoga truly is.

Raj Yoga, often called the "King of Yogas," is the path of self-discipline and meditation that leads to mastery over the mind. The term "Raj" itself means "royal" or "supreme," symbolizing that this yoga gives complete control over body, senses, and most importantly, the mind. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras describe Yoga in the famous aphorism: “Yogaḥ cittavr̥tti nirodhaḥ” – Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. This definition clearly aligns with the essence of Raj Yoga, because Raj Yoga emphasizes meditation (Dhyana) and concentration (Dharana) as the means to still the restless waves of thoughts. Raj Yoga is often systematized into Ashtanga Yoga (Eight Limbs of Yoga) by Patanjali: 1. Yama (ethical discipline) 2. Niyama (personal discipline) 3. Asana (posture) 4. Pranayama (breath control) 5. Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses) 6. Dharana (concentration) 7. Dhyana (meditation) 8. Samadhi (union with the Self) Through these steps, the practitioner moves from outer discipline to inner stillness, finally experiencing the highest state of consciousness (Samadhi). 👉 In this sense, Raj Yoga can indeed be considered the supreme form of Yoga, because it encompasses the complete path from moral foundation to spiritual liberation. It integrates all aspects of yoga practice and leads to the ultimate goal described by Patanjali – mastery of the mind and realization of the true Self.

I often face difficulty in understanding the concepts clearly, and because of that I take more time to solve accountancy questions. Sometimes I also feel nervous during exams. If you could share the roadmap you used, it would be really helpful. Thank you!”
