Start teaching her piano first .

Like Akheel said. Teach her piano first. It's easy to teach in the beginning and kids love it. Guitar and other string instruments need a lot of discipline and motivation which hampers focus.

Question would be.... How much different is western classical music from Indian classical music for an Indian Classical lover to learn from it ? Answer is.... There's a lot difference in both aspects. Western Classical or art music can be characterized by its tonal system and harmonic language, dodecaphonic tuning system, fixed notational system, standard musical forms, and instrumentation. When compared broadly to other traditions of music, Western Classical Music tends to place more emphasis on harmony and less on rhythm, and relies more on fixed performance rather than improvisation.

Indian classical music is both elaborate and expressive. Like Western classical music, it divides the octave into 12 semitones of which the 8 basic notes are, in ascending tonal order, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa for Hindustani music and Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa for Carnatic music, similar to Western music's Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do. However, Indian music uses just-intonation tuning, unlike most modern Western classical music, which uses the equal-temperament tuning system. Also, unlike modern Western classical music, Indian classical music places great emphasis on improvisation.

Depending totally on student's dedication & adaptation. Could be 6 months to 2 years to learn western music basics.

Of course, learning is endless. Western Instrumental would take at least one year but that would happen if you are dedicated and can devote time for practice. You would also have to learn western notations (Staff Notation). Western Vocal would be more difficult unless one has absolutely no accent.

Western classical broadly has music from these eras: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, late Romantic/turn of the century, 20th century. 1950s onwards is considered contemporary classical. More generally, contemporary refers to genres like pop, rock, metal, blues.

Western Classical is Traditional Style of Music. More elaboratively : It has enormous flexibility in rhythm. Homophonic textures consisting of melody + accompaniment.. Melodies are generally balanced and symmetrical. There is a widespread use of dynamics. Major-minor tonality provides the structural framework. Strings The Strings form the most important group (and still are the foundation of the modern orchestra). The first violins carry main melody. The lower strings play accompaniment. Woodwind The purpose of the Woodwind section is to add contrasting tone colours to the accompaniment and to provide occasional melodic solos. Brass The Brass give power to the music and fill out the harmonies. Percussion Timpani give rhythmic bite and emphasis. Western Contemporary is Modern Styles of Music. Elaboratively : Fewer lyrical melodies than other periods. Dissonant Harmonies Complex rhythms Percussiveness Greater use of percussion, brass, and woodwind. Uses synthetic and electronic sounds
