I am 24 years old. I want to build my career in singing. I am an untrained singer and wanted to be a playback singer. What should I do from the beginner level? Should I learn Carnatic music or something else? Please share your valuable feedback.

Hello Ashish if you want to make it to playback singing , i have best of advice for you being a playback singer myself apart from a professional musician , composer music Arranger & Programmer , i can tell you it's not just learning indian classical will help you , offcourse that is the starting point , indian classical is the root to build and shape your voice , and it's a must one to start with so you have to learn Hindustani classical music , along with proper voice modulation training which makes a singer versatile , which a playback singer must have to learn in order to know how sing with various vocal dynamics , and also knowledge of scales chords , various Rhythm Genres , learn how to create drama with Sur , how to give expression in a song imagining the character you are singing for and the situation with the composition which is givenbto you , i teach all of these being a pro at this for many years now and grace of God i am ranking in the 1st position in vocal in my city Kolkata out of 413 teachers in Kolkata in this website , along with 1st position keyboard & piano so i have good professional experience working in regional movies already and i can tell you if you have the dream to become a playback singer in the Indian film industry you have to listen to word music a lot and take initiative to learn from a complete teacher who knows just not vocal music but also an instrument like a pro read less

Yes, the base of classical music is required, but also the dynamics of a song, modulation as per actor for whom you will song, and "feel". Trust me, feel is the most important, rest all can be managed because of technology. I am myself a playback singer and I have seen what music directors expect from a singer, FEEL. There is a solid example of Kishore kumarji, who did not learn, but he had that knack of Bollywood style. He used to LISTEN Indian and Western music very keenly, and tried to embibe them. So what I want to say is you must listen carefully to songs, the way singer sings,their feel, try to copy that, along with learning basics of classical music. It will ease things for you. read less
