Is three years of age too early to get a kid start learning Carnatic music if the kid can quickly memorize and sing rhymes/slokas, considering the parents are not from a singing background?

It is a good age to start. Thier pronunciation and word base improves. My daughter started on rhymes and learnt shlokas by observing when we recited from 3. Today she fluently sings in her mother tongue.

Yes it is very early but if the kid is showing interest then might as well make him learn. Do not expect him to sing well now but he would get a good base and will start singing well once he grows up

Yes, it's very early. You can give it a try and see how the kid is performing. But look at it as a long term thing and be patient to see the benefits of his learning only once he grows up.

My recommendation would be to expose the kid to Carnatic music by playing recordings at home and listening along with the kid. For Carnatic music, three years is a bit early for proper Carnatic music lessons. Perhaps five would be comfortable to very few teachers, but seven is OK. If the child is extraordinary...

My recommendation would be to expose the kid to Carnatic music by playing recordings at home and listening along with the kid. For Carnatic music, three years is a bit early for proper Carnatic music lessons. Perhaps five would be comfortable to very few teachers, but seven is OK. If the child is extraordinary -( you will know that quickly or take the child to an experienced teacher for assessment of potential. ), perhaps sporadic cases 3 years could work out. But just being able to sing rhymes and shlokas may not be an indication that you could start so early. However, constant exposure to good quality Carnatic music (even Indian-style light music or light classical music would be helpful) will go a long way in kidling the child's interest and aptitude. But please continue the classes of shlokas and chants, which will also develop the child's mind and musical / voice-related capabilities. Especially as you have said, there is no family background.Best Wishes! read less

Yes, we should always focus on training at an early age. The grasping power of kids is fantastic and even if they don't sing every time, let them sit in that environment. It develops interest and makes them good learners.
