India has importing wheat from US under public law 480(PL480) since 1954, which gave developing countries the opportunity to purchase wheat, soybean, edible oil and milk powder using their own currency instead of dollars. This allowed countries to save their foreign exchange for upgrading industrial sector. During India Pakistani war of 1965 US threaten india by withdrawing the program and it was cleared by C.Subramaniam who brokered on behalf of Lal Bahadur Sastry, when india condemned US actions in Vietnam, it withdrawn the program, by this time india is self sufficient in wheat due to green revolution. so this time the program is ended. read less
