Why are the sounds generated by a tabla and sitar different?

Tabla is a percussion instrument while sitar is string instrument. Tabla is played by tapping the drum (stretched membrane) and sitar is played by plucking the strings (stretched strings) Hence, sounds generated by tabla & sitar are different.
