Lehra is a vital component of tabla playing in Indian classical music. It serves several purposes: 1. *Rhythmic foundation*: Lehra provides a steady, repetitive rhythmic pattern that underlies the entire composition, giving the music a sense of stability and structure. 2. *Timekeeping*: Lehra helps the tabla player keep track of the taal (rhythmic cycle) and maintain precise timing. 3. *Melodic accompaniment*: Lehra complements the melodic instrument (such as the sitar or sarod) by providing a rhythmic counterpoint that enhances the overall musical texture. 4. *Improvisational framework*: Lehra provides a framework for the tabla player to improvise and create complex polyrhythms and rhythmic variations. 5. *Communication*: Lehra helps communicate the rhythmic structure and mood of the music to the listener and other musicians. 6. *Aesthetic appeal*: Lehra adds an extra layer of beauty and complexity to the music, making it more engaging and captivating. In essence, lehra is the heartbeat of Indian classical music, providing the rhythmic foundation and structure that allows the music to flourish. read less

A good place to check out is the Balepet area near the City railway station. There are a few small but very authentic tabla makers there. If you know how to recognize a quality tabla when you see one, this is the place to go.
