This is in response to the question on bettering your communication. I would say its a combination of all. While you can pick up new words, usage & nuances of the language by reading/ listening ( be it newspapers / books , TV, movies ) its very important to also understand the context of usage . After which you will need to structure sentences using these words as & when relevant. It's not an easy task, its painstaking n slow but will definitely yield results. Befriend / take the help of people in your circle who speak well, shed your hesitation & speak whenever & wherever possible. Constant usage will make you confident & also ensure you make progress. If you don't have good English speaking friends in your circle then , seek a mentor in your superiors / neighbours/ colleagues . You need to be tenacious n determined if you really wish to help yourself. All the best! Savita Iyer- Mindblitz read less

Why are written and spoken versions of many words in English so different?
In any language, not just English, the difference between the spoken and written forms of a word is that the spoken word embodies the living thought, while the written word is a picture or representation of that thought at a later time.
