I would like to know opinions of tutors on the topic 'self-learning vs tutor-assisted learning'. There are many websites and apps which can be used to master Language topics like grammar, vocabulary, listening skills. But a student still needs help and guidance from a tutor especially for topics like spoken English. On the other hand, there are courses which are completely tutor-led. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both the methods?

Tutor

I believe Self-Learning is the best mode of learning provided there is sheer dedication being put by one into it. Some guidance does no harm and I think guidance should be taken as the first step before the self-learning mode by the students can finally by adopted.

Today, as you mentioned, there are millions of GBs stuff free on English speaking and everyone claims their data to be excellent. It is tutor's duty to introduce students to suitable material and guide them on how to use it. This way students are not confused by over-rated claims. Also, class-room coaching ensures consistency and discipline required to learn well. So class-rooms are equally important. read less
