Stress in linguistics refers to the emphasis or prominence placed on a specific syllable or part of a word when speaking. Stress can affect the meaning of a word in some languages, although English is not typically one of them. In languages like Russian or Spanish, the placement of stress can change the meaning of a word. For example, in Spanish, "papa" with stress on the first syllable means "potato," but with stress on the second syllable, it means "pope." Similarly, in Russian, "замо́к" with stress on the first syllable means "castle," but with stress on the second syllable, it means "lock." In contrast, in English, stress typically doesn't change the meaning of a word, but it can affect the nuance or emotional emphasis placed on a word within a sentence. For example, "I didn't say she stole my money" can have seven different meanings depending on which word is stressed. So, while stress plays a more significant role in altering word meaning in some languages, in English, it primarily affects sentence-level nuances. read less
