It is always prudent and just to cater to what they want. That way, they will also be satisfied and learn better through what they like doing. Similarly, topics can also be chosen by themselves or you can ask prod them to choose a topic of interest to them. The latter depends on how much you have interrogated and interacted with your students to know each one of them and their interests.

1) Enhancing vocabulary- If I am good with communication and want to excel and sound more impressive then an extended vocab would come in handy.
2) Living the language - Let's agree on one thing that if someone just want to know how to speak fluently in English without any interest in the language then he/she won't be able to get proficiency over it. Encourage your students to live the language,as in watch English movies/series and listen to good English music.
3) Ending Indianism- One last thing that would help your students to build a great base and structure of the language will be practicing translations as much as possible. Right feedback and followup on translations will give them life long confidence over the language and also end Indianism completely. «less

Best way of improving is start reading whatever you wish but read it with interest and analyse the difference in your way of writing and the authors. You will find many grammatical errors if you are not well versed with it. So here your exercise begins. Very first thing to do is have a grip over grammar and then read newspapers and start working with vocabulary as well.

You should know the syllables first. Try to get correct pronunciation whenever you speak. Open online dictionary and can find the right one . You should know as many words as possible. Then only you can speak. If you do not know words, then you can not construct a sentence and then reproduce the same orally!
